Restoring Community Immunity

Strategic Health Roadmap for York County, SC

The Current Landscape

York County is at a critical juncture for public health protection. Our student immunization rate has shifted from a safe 96.5% to 93.7%, moving the county below the essential 95% safety margin required to prevent localized outbreaks. This decline coincides with religious exemptions more than doubling, from 2.3% to 4.8%. However, with 22 VFC providers serving the county, we have the largest medical infrastructure in the region to address these gaps and safeguard our students.

Strategic Priorities

1. Regaining the 95% Standard

Falling below 95% increases the risk of vaccine-preventable diseases in schools. Returning to the safety standard is the most immediate priority for York County.

Urgency
Launch a targeted "Catch-Up" campaign across Rock Hill, Fort Mill, and Clover school districts to resolve record gaps.
2. Respectful Community Dialogue

The rapid rise in exemptions suggests emerging hesitancy. Addressing concerns through science-based, localized dialogue is the path forward.

Engagement
Partner with the county's large medical community to provide peer-to-peer education on the communal benefits of immunization.
3. Mobilizing VFC Providers

Our 22 VFC providers are a massive asset. Ensuring every parent knows where to find these cost-free services is key to removing technical barriers.

Access
Create a comprehensive digital directory of the 22 VFC locations to be shared through all school enrollment portals.
4. Driving Policy Change

Sustainable improvement requires a supportive policy environment that prioritizes student health.

Advocacy
Provide policy analysis on vaccine requirements and encourage advocacy.
