Onslow County faces a critical gap in community health, compounded by outdated IT infrastructure that often leads to lost or incomplete immunization records. Current data shows that only 84.23% of kindergarteners are up-to-date on required vaccinations (up 0.03% from 2024), falling significantly short of the 95% threshold needed for herd immunity. While 4.37% of students hold a religious exemption (down 0.03%), a concerning 11.4% are listed as neither up-to-date nor exempt. These missing records are in part driven by a system that can often be challenging for local staff to use, is highly dependent on personnel being adequately trained, and does a poor job at meeting the needs of military families and other highly mobile families.
