Legislator Profiles FAQ

What the different profiles for legislators?

There are three primary profiles: “Health Advocate”, “Pragmatic Moderate”, and “Traditional Conservative”. These are based on a combination of a legislator’s votes, public statements, and their constituency. These categorizations will vary by issue.

Why profile legislators?

Part of being an effective educator for public health is meeting people where they are. We do our best to frame public health topics in a way that legislators and community leaders might be responsive. The importance of vaccines for a strong health advocate will look different than a traditional conservative.

What else can this kind of information tell us?

In addition to policy briefs for specific profiles, it can tell us what kind of data and what kind of constituencies can be helpful for persuading legislators.
