What is changing for the 2026 plan year
Starting in late 2025, several federal rules will alter how South Carolinians sign up for and afford their marketplace plans. Accurate information is one of the most effective tools we have to prevent gaps in coverage.
Expiration of enhanced premium tax credits
Unless Congressional action is taken, the extra financial assistance that lowered monthly premiums for ACA plans will end in December 2025. This means that out-of-pocket costs for premiums could rise for many families. It is important to compare plans carefully to find the most affordable option for your household's budget and medical needs.
Shorter timeframes for income verification
When applying for coverage, some individuals are asked to provide documents (like pay stubs or tax returns) to prove their income. Previously, applicants had up to 150 days to submit these records. Going forward, you will only have 90 days to provide this documentation before financial assistance may be adjusted or coverage canceled.
Changes to special enrollment periods
The Special Enrollment Period (SEP) that allowed lower-income consumers to apply for coverage at any time during the year ended in August 2025. Now, most individuals will need to wait for the standard Open Enrollment period or qualify through a life event (such as marriage, moving, or losing job-based insurance).
